Triethanolamine: A Danger

Today we present another of the ingredients classified as great enemies of health, which are in many of our cosmetics, even in some cosmetics that are advertised as "Natural". We talk about triethanolamine (or triethanolamine in Spanish).

From Emocosmetics We recommend that you learn more, little by little, about the ingredients of cosmetics to avoid those that are most harmful to health. And in this work, we will present some of them to help you learn in a simple and effective way. Follow us and you will see how it is not so difficult.

Well, speaking of triethanolamine, we will tell you what the Organization Cosmetic Analysis of the der Stiftung zur Förderung Hautgesundheit (Institute for the Promotion of Skin Health) of Germany, says of this component: As we can see in its classification of cosmetic ingredients, triethanolamine is carcinogenic and highly toxic.

And why do they incorporate it in cosmetic creams? Well, because it is a very cheap cosmetic ph stabilizer, which allows its manufacturers to sell the cosmetic at low prices.

According to the European study of Kosmetik-Inhaltsstoffe AZ, on its page 111, the triethanolamine it is especially toxic, as are nitrosamines which are shown to be strong carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). Since they can develop nitrites and very dangerous organic combinations.

Therefore, we encourage you to get used to looking at the INCI of your cosmetics, that is, the list of ingredients that comes in all the boxes (it is mandatory by law that they all appear with their scientific names). And check, in this case, if among any of them appears the word triethanolamine. Keep in mind that the manufacturer, to try to hide this ingredient, has been able to call it with another of its possible names, which are: Nitrilotrietanol, 2-aminoethanol, Triaethanolamin, Tricolamin, Triethanolamine, or Trolamin

And what to do if it appears? Here it is YOU who decides: do you want to apply a cosmetic with this ingredient daily? Are you willing to pay, even if it is little, for a cosmetic that, more than beauty, can cause you health problems? You decide ... in Emocosmetics We think that users are FREE to apply whatever they want to their skin, but at least they CAN DECIDE FREELY. Therefore, DECIDE, but to decide, it is essential to KNOW, right?

That is what we seek from Emocosmetics, we bet on the health of the skin, on beauty full of joy and for this, we believe in HEALTHY AND RESPONSIBLE cosmetics. For this reason, we try in all our courses, seminars and publications to help the public, giving them tools to choose freely. KNOWLEDGE WILL SET US FREE, Socrates already said and from here we encourage you to expand your knowledge in the wonderful world of beauty and personal care.

  1. Hello,
I'm trying to buy a face cream for sensitive skin, but I can find nothing… it's very difficult to find a face cream without toxic products. Could you recommend me any?
    Thanks in advance 🙂

  2. Thanks for the information; I was using a hair gel that contains this substance, I'm not sure what's causing it but my hair is falling out so I'll stop using it.

  3. Oh YI bought a Next.AB brand antibacterial gel and it seemed inexpensive, when using it I felt a smell like fuel I honestly had me thoughtful about that horrible smell, I started to investigate its ingredients and the word triethanolamine caught my attention and this publication I am grateful that you have opened my eyes and realized the danger that I was running with this product. THANK YOU !!!!

  4. I thank you very much for this information. I had no idea of such a fiasco. My son was the one who put me and my sisters on alert. For economic reasons, I bought a cream with this component, which is also used to make concrete, fabric softener that is also very harmful. Thank you very much and keep well. God bless you.

    1. We are glad that you found the information Lupita useful. Indeed, great caution must be exercised with the use of products that incorporate chemical ingredients, in addition to the fact that it is essential that the customer is aware of how an ingredient can pose a health hazard.
Thank you very much Lupita, and have a great day.

    2. Very useful article, I bought a 100% aloe vera gel in a store of herbs and natural products and obviously it had this ingredient, in other 100% pharmacy gels I have even found PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil! The truth is a shame that the law allows such a scam of consumers, and that it is lawful to poison people with such impunity. Beyond this, the sad thing is that it is impossible to find an aloe gel that is really 100% or even remotely close in the UK… suggestions welcome!

  5. I have bought Valtrún and I am concerned about the ingredient triethanolamine I was thinking of using it for low back pain not continuously just to replace ointments that I see have voltaren or ibuprofen I throw it to a contestant or I can use it very cautiously
    thanks in advance

    1. Hello isbael. For these ailments we recommend our Muscle & Soul product, which is a Natural product without this ingredient so harmful to health. Although if you have so much discomfort, we recommend that you consult with your doctor.
